Nothing says “I’m British” like these three little words: “Want a coffee?” The answer, by the way, is always yes.
But with rising energy costs and news inflation hitting a 40-year high of 9.1%, even the smallest things cost a lot more than before.A few years ago, I wouldn’t have thought twice about putting a kettle on it.
Now, putting the kettle aside, a vexing question pops into my mind.I now take care to only add the amount of water that is almost completely needed to avoid any water waste and use the least amount of energy possible.
Laica claims to have found the answer to this problem with its Dual Flo electric kettle.It’s both a kettle and a single-cup hot water dispenser, so you only need to boil the exact amount of water you need, but you can still boil 1.5L if you’re making multiple drinks.
Setting up the kettle is easy, it has three main parts, the kettle, the base and the drip tray.At the top of the kettle is a dial where you can control the amount of water that comes out of the dispenser, from 150ml to 250ml.
I tried the hot water dispenser first, so I put a cup under the dispenser and it just popped out and rested on top of the drip tray.I have a fairly large cup, so I set the dial to 250ml and brought the kettle to a boil.
The kettle boils in about 30 seconds, which feels very fast compared to the old electric kettles I’m used to.There was a little noise in the kettle when it was about to boil, but not too violent.
After some trial and error, I found that setting the dial to 250ml on any cup of tea would provide enough water, while 150ml might be fine for a smaller Americano.
The Laica Dual Flo Electric Kettle is environmentally friendly, efficient and easy to use.What impresses me most is that if you opt for the single-cup function, the rest of the water in the kettle will remain cold, so you’re really only using the energy you need.
It’s not the most stylish kettle by design, but it’s also not overly fancy, it’s harmless and fits in any kitchen.It also feels sturdy and of good quality.
For someone who often works from home and is often the only person in the house, this kettle has been an absolute lifesaver for me.This means I can happily make cup after cup of coffee without the guilt of boiling too much water.
